eDP Display Interface
One of the main innovations introduced in notebook displays involved the adoption of a standard interface for communicating data from the graphics chip to the LCD panel, which made it possible to adapt various types of screens to a computer; this interface passes under the name of LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) because it uses differential (balanced) lines and was initially adopted in monitors with lamp backlighting and then revisited in the most recent LCDs with LED backlighting. In the latter, the connector, which typically has 40 contacts, carries, in addition to the data and power supply for the control logic of the LCD matrix, the power supply for the backlight.
In the most recent LCD monitors, a simplified but more performing connection is used, called eDP, which is strongly affecting the world of notebooks, netbooks, tablets, all-in-one PCs and the like: it is the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) developed by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) and based on the VESA DisplayPort standard. Its connector is smaller: just 30 contacts.
On the electrical level, the interface is similar in terms of voltage levels and compatible with the Video Port of the GPUs; however, it must be said that it is not interchangeable, in the sense that it changes the arrangement of the contacts and something else that will be explained below.
According to experts and for what is happening on the market, the eDP will replace the LVDS in the years to come, because compared to the latter it has some advantages that translate into savings in energy and space, but also in costs.
